Hi,

Sorry for not responding sooner but it has been a busy week. Anyway, for the sake of simplicity, I will do a round-up of questions I can answer so I hope that is ok.

As to the issue of the code example provided not conforming to the draft or being slightly erroneous, I think it was simply an inattention error on the part of the person. We were having a friendly exploratory discussion between people with different levels of expertise and the example was only meant to illustrate, on the fly, an alternative possibility.

As to why "figure" was being discussed with regards to longdesc, I guess the simple answer is that some people are evidently not crazy about longdesc and it has been for the moment dropped from the draft and in light of some other people emitting worries in that regard, some other other people replied that "figure" might do the job and maybe even better, or ideas to that effect.

As to whether the table included in the "figure" element example was meant to be exposed to graphical UA's, I can only offer my own interpretation because we never got a chance to explore the issue further but from what I understood, I would say it was not. And it was being discussed for a particular type of image which was, in the context of the discussion, histograms and the like, which would have most likely started out as table data to begin with but that some people like to offer up as visual charts as opposed to plain old tables.

And finally, I brought all this up with my original post because, on the one hand, I wanted to offer a little more info as to what was briefly discussed as I thought it might be useful. And on the other hand, as I had said, while I found the idea intriguing (for the particular type of images being discussed and only in that context), I still had questions and reservations as to this proposal that I will not repeat here but that I think would be useful to keep in mind if we want to find ways of ensuring that whatever is retained will work in the real world in which people with a level of expertise and/or interest such as yourselves is usually not the norm.

Best regards,

Catherine
